Meet the Hengst Family
About us
We are an active homeschooling family. Homeschooling gives us an amazing opportunity to fit unique activities into our daily schedule, while learning the whole time. We love the the beach and the outdoors, and now that the weather is so nice we love to hike at places like Brunswick Nature Park and Lake Waccamaw.
Our Family
Our oldest son, Christian, is 13. He enjoys the outdoors, running, karate, video games, science, and any RC items (cars, helicopters). Our only girl Madison is 8, and she likes dance, horses, drawing, dolls, and going to the playground. David, the youngest age 5 years old is bundle of energy and likes basketball, scooters, playgrounds, coloring, and video games.
Why We Joined
We joined the Fit Family Challenge because although we are active, we are not where we want to be in our fitness/health journey. My husband and I certainly could lose a few pounds. I know that I feel better when I am eating right and staying consistently active. My kids are active, but need to learn how important consciously adding healthy activity into your daily schedule is. I think a challenge is so perfect for this. A challenge like this helps to make us accountable for our attainable goal while having fun. By the end of this challenge I hope for us to come out healthier, more fit, and having an attitude that fitness is fun and a way of life. Our ultimate end goal is to make healthy eating and fitness our way of life in a way that it is not a goal anymore, it is just part of our life.

About Us
We are a very close knit family and enjoy spending time with each other. We are the family on the go! My husband and I have been happily married for 23 years! We all love to travel and would like the children to visit every state before they graduate. We serve our community together and this past winter the boys collected and passed out coats, water bottles, tents etc. for the homeless. The whole family enjoys fishing, biking, hiking, swimming with the manatee (Crystal River, Florida) and camping.
Our Family
Tyler is 11 years old and participates with Boy Scout Troop 210. Tyler likes to practice his guitar and hopes one day to play on stage. Tyler works hard with the family training for the 5K Tinted Turtle Color Run and the Tour de Cure, a two day bike ride. Porter, age 9 is a Webelo Cub Scout with Pack 210. Porter plays soccer for Pleasure Island Soccer Association, and also practices with the family training for the 5K Tinted Turtle Color Run.
Husband Tom is 43 and will have a birthday during the challenge! Tom owns a company called SouthEast Imaging Service, and is a proud member of the Wilmington Chapter of Penn State Alumni. Tom enjoys his time with the boys training for the 160 mile bike ride (Tyler and Tom ride a tandem bike) and coaching the boys for the upcoming 5K.
Why We Joined
Our whole family is overweight. I personally have many food issues from my childhood, and I want my children to understand how important nutrition and exercise is for life!
