Pinkalicious
Pinkalicious, the spirited and creative young girl at the heart of many picture books by Victoria Kann, shines in Pinkalicious and the Perfect Present. In her latest story in the series of “I Can Read” books, Kann explores the idea that giving is better than receiving. This level 1 book is perfect for beginning readers. It has simple sentences and familiar words that allow young readers to gain confidence as they begin to read.
Pinkalicious and the Perfect Present begins with the title character and her mother enjoying a bike ride together when they spot a yard sale. The pair decide to visit the yard sale to search for treasures. Mommy gives Pinkalicious some money to spend on herself and she sets off on a search to find the perfect treasure.
After searching through a variety of fun items, Pinkalicious chooses a pink jewelry box that plays a song her mommy sings to her at bedtime. However, she doesn’t want to get the box for herself. She wants to buy it as a surprise for her mom.
Pinkalicious wraps the present, makes a card and leaves the present for her mom on the sofa. Her mom is so surprised when she opens the present and Pinklicious learns that sometimes the best presents are the ones given to others.
My five year old daughter and I loved this story and it provided a great opportunity to discuss why giving is better than receiving.
The “I Can Read Series” of books is published by Harper Collins.
