camp
Summer is right around the corner and there are many wonderful options for keeping kids busy and happy. Overnight camp is one option that many parents choose for their children, but how do you know when the time is right? Here are a few things to consider when making the decision about whether your child is ready for sleep-away camp.
- Consider your child's age. Most overnight camps require that children be at least 6 years old. Young children may not deal well with the separation from parents for more than one day.
- Rely on past experiences with overnight visits. Has your child done well when sleeping over with a relative or friend? If your child displayed any apprehension or anxiety about sleeping somewhere other than home they are not likely ready to participate in an overnight camp.
- Gauge your child's interest in camp. If camp was their idea and they talk about it a lot, they may be ready for the experience. You shouldn't have to convince them to go.
- Discuss expectation for camp. Make sure that your child is aware of what the daily schedule is like and how they are expected to behave. If possible, visit the camp ahead of time so that your child will understand what camp "life" will be like.
- Find a camp that matches your child's interests. Doing research on a variety of camps will result in making a good selection for your child whether it be a day camp or an overnight camp.
