homework
Homework is a task that many children dislike. However, it is an important tool in helping students retain new information, refresh previously taught concepts and become responsible individuals. Parents can help with this nightly task by doing the following:
- Designate a time after school that is set aside for homework. Keep in mind that your child has been in school all day and may need some “down time” when they get home before jumping right into their homework.
- Choose a quiet location where homework can be completed. Distractions can cause your child to lose focus and extend the amount of time needed to complete assignments.
- Make sure to look at your child’s homework sheet/log so that you are aware of the tasks that must be completed. Also, make sure your child has all the materials needed to complete each task. Some assignments may require parent involvement such as taking a practice spelling test. Make sure that you are available to help with these tasks.
- Help when you can. If your child doesn’t seem to understand an assignment, do your best to explain it to them. Remind them that homework is an extension of what they learned in class and try to activate their memory of what was taught in class. Don’t feel bad if you are not able to help as teaching methods have changed over the years. Make sure to jot down a note to the teacher explaining that an attempt was made at the homework but the child didn’t understand how to complete a portion of the assignment.
- Encourage your child about the work they have completed.
- Express interest in what your child is learning. Have them tell you about their homework and share what their favorite assignment is.
- Review completed assignments and have your child redo any work that is messy or incorrect.
- Help students develop good study habits. If you know that your child will be having a social studies test at the end of the week, make sure they study each night to avoid “cramming” for the test at the last minute.
- Develop a good relationship with your child’s teacher. Express concerns about homework as they arise and work together to make the educational experience for your child beneficial.
Remaining positive and helping when you are able will get your child through homework quickly and without too much stress.
