girl scouts pet drive
Five young women of Girl Scout Troop 840 (New Hanover County) have earned their Bronze Award. These 5th graders choose to help the Pender County Humane Society for their project. The girls asked neighbors and friends to take part in their donation drive.
They designed and made flyers asking for items such dog and cat food, kitty litter, dog toys, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. The girls gave flyers to neighbors, and then came back the next weekend to collect items. They shared their project with other scouts by performing a skit, and having their friends help with to make braided fleece dog ropes and cat toys with socks and catnip.
On May 31st, the girls toured the Pender County Humane Society to learn about the shelter, and they enjoyed meeting the cats and dogs who they were helping. They proudly donated 161 items to the facility. The shelter volunteers were impressed with the girls' hard work, and stated that they had never received so many donations at one time before. Bronze Award Advisor Sarah Vitt and Assistant Becky Miller presented the Bronze Awards to the girls on June 4th, 2014.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve, involves team building, community exploration, planning and execution of a community service project. Through its process girls develop personal confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when they work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.
In New Hanover County there are more than 90 troops with almost 1000 girl members, ages 5-18. Currently there are 450 adult volunteers helping these girls learn that “there is greatness in every girl.” For more information and to donate your time or other resources or to find a troop for your daughter e-mail or call Debbie Todd at dtodd@nccoastalpines.org or 910-231-0750.
