Book Rocket
New Hanover County Public Library (NHCPL) has been selected by AWE to be one of 14 libraries across the nation participating this summer in a preview evaluation of Book Rocket™. Currently in pre-release, Book Rocket™ is AWE’s online, interactive reading tracking product.
Book Rocket™ may be used by parents of young readers from PreK to Grade 6 to track summer reading online. An optional pre- and post-program reading assessment provides parents with a detailed look at their child’s reading skills. The library will also receive overall program success metrics.
“Librarians know that summer reading is crucial for maintaining reading skills during summer vacation,” said Margaret Miles, Head of Youth Services at New Hanover County’s Main Library. “We’re excited to be able to offer Book Rocket because it gives parents a tool that measures their children’s reading skills at the beginning and the end of summer.”
When creating a Book Rocket account for their children, parents opt in or out of the assessment, and assign a summer reading goal for their children in minutes or books read. The program offers grade-appropriate recommended reading lists, but children are not limited to reading from the list they pick. “We encourage kids to read for enjoyment and interest when they’re out of school,” said Ms. Miles.
More information and a link to Book Rocket are on NHCPL’s Summer Reading Club webpage: http://nhcpl.libguides.com/summerReading.
Regardless of a child’s age, proficiency level or interest, New Hanover Public Library and Book Rocket™ hope to prove once again this summer that “Reading is a Blast!”
