It can be fun to make resolutions as we usher in a new year. Let your kids make their own realistic resolutions as well. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following suggestions for healthy resolutions for children of all ages.
Preschoolers
- I will put my toys away when I am finished playing with them.
- I will brush my teeth twice a day.
- I will wash my hands after using the bathroom and before eating.
Kids ages 5-12
- I will drink water and reduced-fat milk daily and will only have sodas and fruit drinks on special occasions.
- I will wear a helmet when biking.
- I will find an activity or sport I like and try to do it at least 3 times a week.
- I will wear a seat belt every time I get in a car.
- I'll be nice to other kids and try to make friends with those children that may be shy.
- I will never give out personal information on the internet.
Kids ages 13 and up
- I will try to eat 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables every day.
- I will take care of my body by eating healthy foods and exercising.
- I will only spend 1-2 hours each day on video games, TV shows and phone apps.
- I will limit my time on social media.
- I will help out in my community by volunteering my time and helping others.
- I will talk to an adult I trust when faced with a difficult decision, feeling stressed or angry.
- I will resist peer pressure to try alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
- I will not use a cell phone or text message while driving.
- I will always wear a seat belt in a car.
