stickers
About a month ago my 6 year old daughter received a piece of mail from a friend asking her to participate in something called "sticker club". The requirements were that we had to send one pack of stickers to the child named on the letter we received and then copy and send out six new letters asking other kids to participate. The result if everyone participates is that your child ends up with 36 packs of stickers.
My first thought was "oh my goodness...this is like chain mail for kids". However, the more I though about it, the more it seemed like something interesting and educational to participate in. As a teacher, I knew that I could use this as an opportunity to teach a little geography. I could talk to my daughter about the geographical location where we were sending the stickers and the six additional letters to. Then, if stickers did come in the mail, we could look on a map to see where they had come from. Not to mention that most kids love stickers so this is a great way to cheaply acquire more.
So, I re-wrote the letter that was originally mailed to me as it looked a bit messy and I added the information about it being a great opportunity to teach a little geography. Then, my daughter and I went to the Dollar Store and selected one pack of stickers to mail to the child named in our original letter. We enclosed a small note to the child with the stickers and also sent out the other six letters.
As a result of our efforts, my daughter received a envelope from Hawaii which contained 2 packs of stickers and a postcard from Pearl Harbor. She was thrilled to get the mail and see that the envelope had stickers for her. We looked at a map and located Hawaii and I also showed her some images online of the islands.
Even though I was a little hesitant at first, I am really glad that I decided to take a few minutes to participate in the sticker club. Even if the stickers from Hawaii wind up being the only ones we get, it was still a great educational opportunity and I would certainly recommend it to other parents.
