Trick or treat
Enjoy Halloween festivities and keep your kids safe by following these simple safety tips developed by the Centers for Disease Control.
- Never allow children to trick-or-treat alone. Make sure an adult is present and try to stay with a group.
- Costume accessories should not be dangerous. For those requiring swords or knives, make sure these are soft and flexible.
- Carry a flashlight when trick-or-treating in the dark and wear reflective clothing or attach reflective tape to costumes or bags so drivers can see you.
- Make sure costumes fit well and there are no loose pieces that may cause tripping or falling.
- Keep away from candles and make sure costumes are flame-resistant.
- Only visit homes that are well-lit and only enter homes of people you know when accompanied by an adult.
- Examine all treats before allowing children to eat them. Eliminate ones that are choking hazards and those that appear to be open or tampered with.
- Stick with factory-wrapped treats and never eat homemade ones made by strangers.
