Zoe B toys
So many children’s toys are made of plastic which makes them nearly indestructible. However, plastic toys are usually frowned upon by environmentalists because they are made from new plastic which does not biodegrade. Some toy companies have responded to demands for better plastic toys by crafting them from recycled plastic and biodegradable plastic. Here are a few to check out:
Good: Sprig Toys makes toys out of a substance they call “Sprigwood” which is a mixture of reclaimed wood and recycled plastic. The line of toys is also “kid powered” or battery-free meaning they will not be contributing to batteries in landfills. The products range from vehicles such as trucks and boats to creative play sets featuring characters and gear. I had the chance to review the Dolphin Explorer Boat which includes 2 boats (one large and one small), 2 dolphins (Mother and baby), 1 Adventure Guide with detachable hat, backpack and life preserver. This fun set is very durable and perfect for pre-school play in the water and out.
Better: Green Toys makes a line of products made from recycled plastic (mostly milk jugs) and other environmentally friendly materials. The toys are made in the USA which saves a lot of energy and reduces greenhouse gases. They are also packaged in recycled corrugated boxes with no plastic, cellophane or twist ties making them 100% recyclable. The line of toys includes building sets, planting kits, play food sets, beach toys and more. The Planting Kit and Tool Set that I reviewed were very sturdy and well-made.
Best: North Carolina based company, Zoe B Organics, has created the world’s first biodegradable beach toys. These toys are made from bioplastic (a corn based plastic made with US grown corn). This plastic contains none of the harmful substances that some plastics contain such as BPA, PVC and phthalates . Unlike other plastics, the corn-based version will biodegrade within 2-3 years if buried in soil, composted or happens to wash out to sea. The beach toys are produced in the USA as well. When I received the set for review, I was initially impressed by the size and organization of it. The bucket is approximately 5 inches tall and wide and the sifter sits on top to act as a lid. Carefully tucked inside are 2 cups and one sand shovel. This compact set of toys will fit easily into any beach bag. The bioplastic seems very tough and sturdy and the fun colors make it quite appealing. My daughter can’t wait to hit the beach and use this set!
