play doh
It's hard to believe that a toy that has been around for over fifty years was originally created to be a non-toxic cleaner for wallpaper. That is the beginning of the story of the substance that came to be Play Doh. In 1955 the compound was introduced in schools and nursery schools and was well liked by teachers and students.
In 1956 the inventors of Play Doh, Noah and Joseph McVicker, formed Rainbow Crafts Company to make and sell the new modeling compound. The original Play Doh only came in one color, off white, and was sold in 1.5 pound cans.
By 1960, several additional colors had been added and the Play Doh Fun Factory was introduced. The Fun Factory included a toy press that extruded a strip of Play-Doh when the handle was pressed down. Stencil shapes could be held in front of the mouth of the press to make the extruded play clay take different shapes, and then use a plastic knife to cut the strip into smaller pieces.
As the years passed, Play Doh has been a favorite to children of all ages. Hasbro, the owner of Play-Doh since 1991, has continued to produce imaginative play sets that encourage children to create.
