Spring Break
For the past few weeks, children in New Hanover County have been eagerly counting down the days until spring break. For many of their parents, however, the countdown to finding a week’s worth of activities and events to keep the kids busy has also begun, and this task can unfortunately feel extremely daunting. Although not nearly as overwhelming as the ever-approaching summer break, it is still very difficult for many families to find creative ways to keep kids busy for an entire week without breaking the bank. If you find yourself struggling to fill your children’s spring break schedule at home with activities that everyone will enjoy, here are a few suggestions that are sure to help!
Play Chef - No matter what age your children are, you can use this week as a time to really introduce them to the art of cooking. Let their creativity shine as you discuss favorite foods, search for recipes together, challenge each child to try new flavors, and see what sorts of tasty treats you can bake and cook together. Maybe each child can pick any sort of dish or dessert they can think of, or even simply choose a favorite fruit, flavor, or color, and then see what delicious creations you can create to highlight that choice. Use the kitchen as a playground and let your kids get messy while they use their imagination and learn about the joys of cooking.
Be Crafty - Another way to encourage your children to explore their artistic sides this week is to take a trip to the local craft store. Allow them to choose any age appropriate craft kit and make a pact that by the end of the week, you will work together to create something wonderful. Whether they gravitate towards knitting, painting, sculpting, jewelry making, or any of the many other craft projects out there, with a little encouragement and help along the way, your children are bound to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment as they create something so special with you.
Grow Something - Spring break is the perfect time to get outside and start gardening. Getting your kids involved will allow them to lend a hand in the prepping, plotting, planting, and watering of any variety of flowers or plants that you choose together. If growing vegetables in your garden is a possibility, children can also experience the excitement of getting to eat something that they have helped to grow themselves.
Become a Tourist - A day with nothing to do can easily become a great day to explore our very own city. Tell your kids that you are all going to pretend that you are visiting the area from far away, and then check out Wilmington’s official tourism site for ways to discover the sights and local attractions that make our area so great!
