Ferry Ride
The idea of driving a car right onto a boat, and then of riding that boat across the river, is enough to make almost any small child excited. I know this firsthand, as my 3 year old son experienced his first ferry ride this past weekend on the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry. Needless to say, his mind was blown at the very concept of a car riding on a boat, and our whole family loved experiencing it with him. This year-round ferry service, provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, makes for a unique, inexpensive family outing.
If you go
The cost (one way) per car is $5.00, while pedestrians are $1.00 and bicyclists are $2.00. The ride crosses the Cape Fear River and lasts approximately 35 minutes long. It runs continuously throughout the day, 365 days a year. The complete schedule can be found on www.ncdot.gov or by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY.
