Flight of the Butterflies
Marbles Museum, located in downtown Raleigh, NC, is an amazing hands-on museum for children. Since our visit last spring, my 4 year old daughter has been begging to return. So, we decided to make a trip to the museum to enjoy the exhibits and also check out the new IMAX documentary Flight of the Butterflies in 3D.
After spending about 3 hours "playing" at the museum, we were excited to check out the new IMAX movie. I must say that my expectations of the 3D movie were not very high since everything seems to be in 3D these days and it is not really that impressive anymore. However, I am pleased to say that I was really blown away by this film.
The movie is the true story of Fred Urquhart, a scientist that spent his entire career tracking the flight patterns of the Monarch butterfly with help from many "citizen scientists". The interesting story of his search is beautifully intertwined with amazing footage of butterflies making the perilous journey across the continent. The film ends with the discovery of the Monarch's secret hideaway where millions of butterflies converge.
The 3D effects in this film really made me feel as if the butterflies where in the same room. My daughter felt the same way and was trying to share her popcorn and drinks with the insects as they seemed to fly into the audience. The cinematography was breathtaking and by the end of the film I was almost in tears because it was just so beautiful and moving.
I would highly recommend a visit to Marbles Museum while this film is playing. Plan to spend the day enjoying all the exhibits as well as the amazing film Flight of the Butterflies.
