holiday savings
The holidays are approaching quickly and the retail frenzy has already begun. The Halloween decorations and costumes were barely out of site when the Christmas merchandise began filling store shelves. The stress of holiday shopping is upon us and many families are wondering how they can satisfy their kid's wants and not break the bank.
According to Forbes.com, the average American family spent $750.68 last year on holiday gifts. This doesn't include what was spent on decorations, special holiday meals, etc. Making a holiday special for a child shouldn't have to cost a lot of money. Family traditions like baking cookies, singing carols and spending quality time together should be the focus. However, kids will be kids and they do love receiving toys.
There are ways to get your children special toys without spending a fortune. Consider these options:
- Shop for large items such as bikes, tricycles, art tables, etc. on websites such as Craigslist or EBay. You can often find used items that are in great shape that your child would really like and get lots of use out of. For pieces of furniture, a fresh coat of paint can make something look brand new.
- Be creative and make your own gifts. If your daughter wants a doll house, turn a piece of furniture like a book case into a doll house. Pinterest offers many great ideas and You Tube is also a great resource for learning how to make something.
- If there is a specific item that your child wants, be on sale patrol each week to see if the item goes on sale. Get a Sunday paper and check out all the sales flyers. Also, look for toys online to see if retailers offer a cheaper price than your local stores. However, be aware of shipping charges when you purchase anything online.
- Limit stocking stuffers to items that cost $1 or less. Dollar Stores and the dollar section of department stores are a great place to find small toys and treats for stockings.
