I find myself packing the same lunch for my preschooler every day she is in school. On the days she is home for lunch she prefers to eat something hot. So, I decided to try out an insulated food jar to offer her something hot to eat on school days as well.
Thermos makes a great product that is the perfect size for a child's lunch box. The FUNtainer Food Jar is a Thermos with a 10 ounce capacity which measures 3.5" W x 3.5" D x 4.5'' H. It offers double wall vacuum insulation for temperature retention (whether hot or cold). The container has a wide mouth which makes it easy to fill and eat out of.
Thermos claims that the container can keep food hot for 5 hours and cold for 7 hours. When researching various insulated containers, I learned that they work best if you warm them before adding warm food. So, prior to filling my daughter's FUNtainer with mac and cheese, I filled it with very hot water and let it sit for 10 minutes. Four hours after I filled her container she ate lunch and her food was still warm so the insulation works great.
The FUNtainer is easy to clean with soap and water and can be washed in the dishwasher on the top rack.
