Read to baby
As a teacher it is my opinion that a book is an excellent gift, especially for young people. Reading helps develop vocabulary, strengthens comprehension and can often take the reader to new places.
With the rise of subscription services, I was certain that there must be some out there that deliver books on a monthly basis. Through a bit of research, I discovered Gift Lit. The company was founded in 2006 by two mothers that wanted to provide high quality books for their own children and for family living far away. Their idea is that a book given as a gift should be a book worth keeping. To accomplish this goal, the founders developed an advisory board of librarians, educators, authors and industry expert to help select the best books available.
Gift Lit subscriptions can be for any age person from babies to adults and can be purchased for 3, 6 or 12 months. Most books are hardback but some are paperback and therefore the prices of the subscriptions vary. Once a subscription is ordered, individual books will be delivered to the recipient for the selected number of months. They come nicely packaged and wrapped in paper with a ribbon. Gift Lit also includes a complimentary gift card and set of personalized bookplates - one for each month of the gift. Gift cards are printed with a personalized message and this gift message will be repeated on each month's book package.
My daughter received a three month subscription and enjoyed each book that was delivered. She loved opening a "present" each month and I enjoyed reading her new books to her. The books were all unique. They sent titles that I had never come across in my 15 years of teaching and we had never seen in our local library. Therefore gift givers don't have to worry that the "classics" (which the recipient may already own) will be sent.
