Little Lola
Little Lola, written by Julie Saab and illustrated by David Gothard, is a new book about a little kitty that goes to school.
In the beginning of the story, the reader sees that Lola has a "To Do" list with all the things she wishes to do for the day. She completes the first five tasks quickly and has one thing remaining..."have an adventure". The next scene shows the little cat getting dressed up and heading for a school bus. Lola is excited to have an adventure at school.
The book follows Lola throughout an entire day at school. She seems to be having a lot of fun learning and taking part in extra-curricular activities. Then, when it is her turn to share at show-and-tell, the mouse she shares escapes and causes a bit of chaos in the classroom. Lola is happy, however, to put things back in order before she leaves the classroom. Overall, her day in school is successful.
This book has a simple narrative and is beautifully illustrated. It would be a perfect book to share with students beginning school to reveal some of the things they will get to experience in school (minus the cat, of course). Emergent readers will be able to recognize and read several sight words throughout the book as well.
Little Lola is available from Harper Collins Publishers.
